Stop dog's aggressive acts toward postal carriers

The average postal carrier has a definite aversion to certain words and phrases.

"We need the moisture" is one such phrase.

But if you really want to make a postal carrier nervous, try, "Don't worry, he's friendly.'' Not only does that mean that the dog is loose, but the postal carrier knows that these words are frequently followed by, "Gee! I'm terribly sorry. He's never done that before!"

Postal carriers really have a hard time when it comes to neighborhood dogs. The dogs perceive them as intruders and challenge them routinely. The dogs think they're just doing their job. From the dog's perspective, these people come into their neighborhood, wander from place to place very suspiciously and then leave, audaciously coming back again and again.

Seeing the intruder in the neighborhood drives some dogs into a frenzy. The closer the intruder comes to the property, the more frenzied the dog becomes. Eventually, the postal carrier goes on to the next area. But from the dog's point of view, its barking and aggressive display chased the dangerous intruder away - again and again, day after day. The intruder is driven away by Fluffy's vicious display of heroics at the bay window or front gate.

But what happens if Fluffy gets out of the yard? As the dog successfully chases this dangerous intruder away from the house every day for weeks, months, or some times, years, its ego and self-confidence as it relates to being aggressive to potential intruders goes off the charts. Fluffy becomes Super Dog, defender of family, home and property. And postal carrier beware, if Fluffy can get to you to bite you, he will. In his mind, he's won every "fight" he's been faced with each time the carrier gets close to his house.

I've tried to contact the Fort Collins Post Master in order to set up a workshop to teach the Fort Collins carriers how to handle aggressive dogs, but no one ever returns my calls. So, I guess I'll just use my column to try and help these poor people out.

If you have a dog that acts aggressively toward your postal carrier, UPS driver, meter reader or anyone else just trying to do their job, you need to take immediate action to stop the behavior. It can be done. It’s one thing if the Fluffy you own is a Pekinese or other small dog. But if your Fluffy is a big dog, your postal carrier or others are in danger.

Make sure your dog understands that there are consequences to aggression. And remember, your carrier doesn’t want to hear, “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.” He wants to hear, “Don’t worry, he’s locked up.”

You won’t be making your dog less of a watch dog. You’ll be making him a safer house pet.

Dog Travel Tip #1: Keep your dog cool in your car

During summer drives, keep the air-conditioner going. If you make a stop, never leave an animal alone in a closed car, where he can overheat. Even short trips in cool weather can problematic for dogs as sunlight still generates enormous heat in the closed areas of a car.

Dog Travel Tip #2: Keep your dog secure in the car

The safest way to travel with your dog in a car is to put her in a dog crate or dog carrier. Make sure all bowls are fixed to the dog crate or dog carrier so they don't move around. Also be sure to get your dog used to the dog crate or dog carrier by letting her site inside for a few minutes each day leading up to your trip.

Dog Travel Tip #3: Micro clip your dog in case she gets lost far from home

Your dog should be microchipped and her license and identification tags engraved with your name and address. You might want to add a neighbor or relative's contact information in case someone calls while you are away.

Dog Travel Tip #4: Don't let your dog stick her head out the window

Car windows should be opened enough to allow air into the car, but not opened enough to allow your dog to stick her head out of the window. This keeps your dog in the safest position. Of course, if you followed Dog Travel Tip #2 and placed your dog in a dog crate or dog carrier this won't be a problem.

Dog Travel Tip #5: Check with airlines on latest dog travel regulations

Within the United States, an estimated 160 million people and 500,000 pets travel by air each year. Flying with a pet in tow has become more expensive – and complicated – than it used to be. Dog travel regulations not only vary from airline to airline by rules may changed based on various Homeland Security travel directives.

In general small dogs can travel in a carry on dog carrier, while larger dogs must go into the cargo. Be prepared to place your dog in an airline approved dog carrier and for some airlines bring proof of vaccinations.

Finally, after you take the necessary precautions don't forget to have fun. A little preparation can go a long way in making vacation with your dog a lot more fun.

Saddle Bag Dog Carrier Backpack reviews:

I bought this as a pack for my Lab to participate in a charity dog walk. The morning of the walk we put 6 16oz bottles of water (3 per side)and a small towel in it to carry for us and hopefully (as Ceasar puts it) give him some more work. I put it on him several weeks ago when we got it to get him used to it. He wore it comfortably for about an hour so I'm confident we it had adjusted well. I tell him to wait by the door and go open the truck, call him to load up, he jumps in and the front strap disintigrates. Literally nothing left the webbing holding the buckle to the right side is gone. I look at the way this is sewn and its prety easy to see what happened.

The webbing is looped to itself with one row of stitching, not sewn thru or around. It is also nylon or some marterial not condusive to use as webbing. I looked at the $50-60 saddle bags and thought I wouldn't get my monies worth. I hate being wrong like most people but I hate calling a company asking for a refund or something else worse. Chalk this one up to not following instincts. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT It really is made poorly.

She's so bad luck for cheap dog carrier backpack which she bought it
